About Poet Furniture

Carol Poet

For over three decades, Carol Poet has created beautiful homes, has transformed the interior landscapes of hundreds of living and work spaces and has created furniture when the perfect piece was simply no where to be found. Not a bad day’s work.

Ms. Poet’s vision and dedication to her craft have made her one of the leading Interior Designers and while her reputation has long been established, her career is now perched on the cusp of exciting new achievements.

Her journey has been a fascinating one. She was born in Seattle but moved as a child with her family to New York City. The initial shock of a new coast soon gave way to an appreciation and love of the cultures of both West and East. Personally and professionally, her embrace of the grand traditions of the eastern seaboard and the fresher, looser rules attitude of California have influenced every step of her career.

Poet is the only child of parents who both had careers outside the home. She learned early on to fend for herself and to take on the responsibilities and chores of the house. At an early age she taught herself to cook, clean and sew. To amuse herself, she would rearrange furniture and paint walls. She notes, “I was really the first Martha Stewart, and all this at age ten!” An unorthodox childhood? Perhaps. But a natural stepping off point to her future career.

Early on, Poet fell in love with fashion and design; it led to a short, sweet career as a clothing buyer in New York. Somehow, the fragrant allure of the Pacific reached her in the canyons of the Garment District and she returned to the West Coast, this time settling in Los Angeles. She decided to marry her love of fashion and fabrics with the world of interior design and furniture. The Poet Design legend took flight.

After finishing an initial apprenticeship, she landed a coveted position with the architectural / interior design firm, Sharon Landa Design Associates. Soon she became a partner and the firm changed its name to Landa-Poet Design Associates. Poet recalls this period as “an amazing decade of having the best mentor and teacher possible, my partner Sharon Landa. During the decade of this partnership, Poet became a Certified Interior Designer. She also served on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Interior Designers (ISID), and became a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

She founded her own interior design firm, Poet Design Company in 1987. As a result of her training with Landa, and her understanding of architectural design, her firm specializes in interior and construction design for residential and commercial projects.

Her clients include an impressive list of Hollywood legends, famous athletes and well-known corporate executives. This disparate group has at least one thing in common: Carol Poet’s exquisite taste and stunning, visual imagination.

Poet believes that laurels are nice to have, but not so good to rest on. Therefore, she launched Poet Furniture. After years of designing custom pieces for her discerning clients, it was a natural progression to create her own line. “These pieces were conceived and designed because we couldn’t find what we needed in the market place.”
